If you grew up watching The Santa Clause movies, you probably remember Bernard, the smart, slightly sarcastic, always-in-charge Head Elf, played by David Krumholtz.
Bernard wasn’t just another character, he felt like the heart of the North Pole. Thus, when viewers are watching The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, and suddenly it appears that Bernard has disappeared, the entire world raises the same question: What happened to Bernard?
Why Didn’t Bernard Appear in The Santa Clause 3?
The biggest reason Bernard doesn’t show up in The Santa Clause 3 has nothing to do with the plot. It has everything to do with real-life scheduling and script changes.
1. David Krumholtz couldn’t return
At the time Disney was filming The Santa Clause 3, David Krumholtz was starring in the TV series Numb3rs, and the shooting schedules overlapped. He simply couldn’t be in two places at once. His TV role required a ton of filming, and he wasn’t able to commit to the long production timeline of a Christmas movie.
2. The script shifted away from Bernard’s role
Even though Bernard was the Head Elf in the first two films, the third movie focused much more on:
- Jack Frost’s takeover
- Santa losing the North Pole
- The big “escape clause” twist
Because the story moved in a different direction, the writers reduced the elf roles overall, which made it easier to remove Bernard without rewriting the entire script.
How Did the Movie Explain His Absence?
It didn’t.
There’s no in-movie explanation, no line of dialogue, not even a quick mention of where Bernard went. In the story’s universe, Bernard simply isn’t shown, and Curtis is suddenly the new Head Elf.
Fans had to piece the truth together from interviews years later. Krumholtz has said he loved playing Bernard, but Disney didn’t take his character in a direction that made sense for him. Between that and his schedule, he ended up stepping away.
He also joked in interviews that Bernard would’ve looked too old for an elf by the third film, elves don’t exactly age like humans.
Did Bernard Ever Return to the Franchise?
Yes, and fans were thrilled.
Bernard finally came back in Disney+’s 2022 series The Santa Clauses.
This time, the writers gave him a proper explanation: Bernard retired from the North Pole and grew older so he could live a human life with the woman he loved.
It was a sweet, fitting closure that fans had been waiting nearly two decades for.

Final Thoughts
Bernard didn’t disappear because of drama or a secret plot twist. It was simply a combination of scheduling conflicts and script changes. Nevertheless, his absence was experienced by the fans who had grown up watching him to steer Santa with dry wit and silent leadership.
Luckily, the Disney+ show provided his character with a warm and emotional goodbye as he always needed, and it turned out that even elves can have a happy ending.
