Boots Ending Explained – What Happens to Sergeant Sullivan?

The new Netflix comedy-drama Boots is not just another coming-of-age movie. It is set in the 1990s, where the main character, Cameron Cope, is a closeted gay teenager who is joining the Marines in an attempt to get away from his dysfunctional family life.

What begins as a desperate bid to get some direction soon becomes a harsh challenge of endurance, character, and life.

The show poses a more fundamental question by the end, could an individual really fit in a world that is not accepting of them?

The Journey of Platoon 2032

Initially, Cameron thinks that by becoming a Marine, he will have something to believe in and be able to keep Ray near him. However, life in boot camp is not what he had imagined. Sergeant Sullivan is the hard instructor who pushes the recruits of Platoon 2032 to extremes, and it appears that he has some kind of personal obsession with Cameron.

Cameron eventually begins to develop an attachment with his fellow recruits, such as Nash, Ochoa, and the Bowman brothers. Their motives varied and prompted them to seek enlistment, but the family pride, ambition, a second chance, and so forth all led to the formation of an unlikely brotherhood. Their climax test is the last test called The Crucible, a violent test that takes 54 hours to find out whether they qualify to be called a Marine.

Tragedy befalls during The Crucible. One of the soldiers, Ochoa, is killed, having heard that his wife was cheating on him, rocking the whole platoon. The group drags even nearer rather than disintegrating. At one point, when Santos, another member, is having difficulties with his injured knee, the others join him by taking his burden, such that no one is left behind. It is a strong one, as an indication of how far they have gone as a team.

By the time the training concludes, Platoon 2032 comes out stronger and united than ever as full-fledged Marines. Their celebration does not last very long. Cameron and Ray are at a bar, and they witness breaking news that the U.S. will send its troops to the Middle East, which foreshadows the beginning of the Iraq War. It is a sudden feeling of uncertainty as to what will happen in the future with their knowledge of their victory.

Why Does Cameron Decide to Stay in the Marines?

Cameron’s personal journey comes full circle when his mother, Barbara, shows up with shocking news, he’s actually only 17 years old, which means he can legally leave the Marines if he wants. She even offers him an out, knowing how dangerous it will be for him as a gay man in the military.

But Cameron refuses. He is finally able to feel like he belongs somewhere despite the fear, the loss, as well as the secret he carries on. To be a coward is to be a coward, to decide to remain strong despite the fact that the world is not yet prepared to accept him. He persuades his mother to sign the waiver, and he becomes a Marine.

What Happens to Sergeant Sullivan?

The story of Sergeant Sullivan is parallel to that of Cameron. Similar to the young recruit, he is a closeted gay man, only of older age, more shattered, and with regrets.

Several years earlier, Sullivan had been involved in an adulterous relationship with Major Wilkinson, another Marine, and tragically, the truth was revealed. Guilt and fear haunt Sullivan, and he finally turns AWOL to avoid the same fate that destroyed the life of his lover.

He leaves behind to give Cameron his last strenuous part of the training, and can see in him the courage that he had never possessed. It is a bitter and, at the same time, a sweet moment that indicates how the two men are both moulded and maimed by the same battle.

Does Ray Finally Earn His Father’s Respect?

Ray, the best friend of Cameron, enlists in the Marines so that he can prove to his father, who is such a strict man. His dream is to become the Honor Man, the highest-ranking member of the platoon. But when Cameron goes missing during The Crucible, Ray breaks protocol to help him. His act makes him lose the honor, which goes to Nash instead.

Even so, Ray doesn’t regret it. At the end, he understands that the real pride is not about trophies and awards, it is about being loyal and being there when needed by people who are the most important.

Final Verdict

Ultimately, though, Boots is not actually about war or training but identity, bravery, and being. Cameron goes into the Marines with the hope that he can transform himself, yet he comes out of it knowing that he does not have to. Platoon 2032 is a story about friendship, survival, and how a person can find his or her strength in the strangest of places.
